Softbox Solution for Socket Lights:

The Neewer Umbrella Softbox

I was excited when I discovered there was an affordable and adjustable socket light that fits on a standard light stand because it allows us to use LED par bulbs easily. It has a standard edison socket that takes most practical bulbs, a locking joint and best of all, a 1k receiver. This means it can fit on any standard light stand, which has a 5/8" diameter stud, a standard in the industry. The stud on a grip stand and even a grip arm are this standard 5/8" diameter.

The 1k reciever on a light stand is a standard in the industry at 5/8" diameter, same as the stud on a grip stand and even a grip arm.

So what could be better then that?

The LimoStudio Double Head Swivel: A version with two of the same adjustable sockets, allowing us to put two bulbs on one stand.

Now if I could easily add diffusion without having to use a grip stand and an open frame. These light sockets are from the still world and have a receiver to take an umbrella which I thought would be great to utilize in some way. Now I could use a diffusion umbrella’s but personally I don’t care for them. They’re little bigger then what I like to use and spill light everywhere, requiring a lot of cutting and boxing in.  Okay, so what I’m really looking for is a soft-box. And that’s when I found this:

The Neewer Speedlite Umbrella Softbox. It’s the best of both words. A softbox with a reflective interior and 28”x28” diffusion front, and it’s a collapsable umbrella. Perfect to use with bright CFL’s like 45 watters. Gives us roughly 1290 to 1750 lumens (120 to 160 foot candles).

I wanted to see if I could use LED floods to fill the diffusion which meant turning the umbrella around. In order to feed the Neewer umbrella in that direction, I had to pull a tension clip off which was in the way, and is there for a reason, as the locking knob barely works. It’s threaded through plastic and is almost useless.

But the stand goes through a zippered hole at the bottom, that does help to some degree in keeping it from spinning around.

But I couldn’t push it back far enough to get a nice spread so it wasn’t really worth it.

What I like about the Neewer Soft-box and duel LimoStudio combo is I’m getting a light weight, smaller unit I can use in tighter spaces and for tighter shots. And I can use the Limo for other uses like punching into a fill card or the ceiling.

LimoStudio Double Head Swivel, at $14.50 US and the Neewer Speedlite Umbrella Softbox at $19.99.
