Adjusting Hanging Objects: The Rolling Hitch

Adjusting Hanging Objects: The Rolling Hitch Today we learn how to tie the Rolling Hitch, a very useful knot that makes it easy to place and adjust the height of objects you hang into your frame Welcome to Pull My Focus, adventures in the technical and business world of video filmmaking, where we provide you with the tips, techniques and guides you need to produce great video.

Positioning and repositioning an object to enhance a shot’s composition can be a bit tricky at times. Especially when the shot changes. That never happens.

So I’m going to show you the rolling hitch, a knot that will make adjusting hanging objects in your frame a lot easier.

So your line is hanging from a grip arm, the grid or the ceiling. Take the working end, create a loop, and then roll it twice around the line inside the loop, then bring it up and once more around. Now tighten it.

Add your object on the end, the line pulls on the hitch which digs into the line, holding it in place. To adjust, just lift the weight of the object, taking tension off the line, and slide your hitch up or down as needed. The weight of the object will pull on the hitch again, locking it in place again.

And that’s how you tie the Rolling hitch, which might also go by the name Taught Line Hitch.

Note that you don't have to tie it in a loop,  you could tie one line to another line and adjust it that way. If you do that you want to tie a stopper knot at the bottom.
