If you tend to shoot inside, you probably rely on natural daylight as much as possible. Whether shooting in a corporate office or your living room, window daylight may be your key, backlight and/or ambient fill. But you still need some additional lighting to augment it, to add what’s missing.
You may use clip lights because, well they’re cheap, the reflector dish pushes light forward were we want it, and they take standard light bulbs. This is great because of the availability of CFL’s and par LEDs, which give us easier access to daylight balanced light at low wattage with low heat. But the clip part of clip light sucks. Here’s a solution.
The LimoStudio AC Socket Light Stand Mount.
This baby comes from the still photography world and is designed to work with umbrellas but we like them because we get an edison socket with a lockable, adjusting joint, on a 1k receiver which fits on a standard light stand. You could use any edison bulbs here, but we like to use daylight balanced 12watt LED par lights, which are roughly a 100 watt equivalent.
Pars stands for parabolic aluminized reflector, which basically means they have a built in reflector to push light forward.
They’re meant to be used in recessed ceiling light systems, and have a fresnel on the front to help focus more light in one direction, which is what we want. Put this on a light stand next to the camera with some diffusion for a medium close-up or closeup, you get an eye light and front fill. Put it on the end of a grip arm angled out and you’ve got a backlight and hairlight.
Couple this with an LED compatible dimmer and now you're really cooking with photons. You can also angle them into a card for a bounce light or into the ceiling to augment ambient light in a room.
And at $9.99 for two they’re actually cheaper then a clip light. If you don't already have a bunch of light stands laying around, you can get two of those for $25 bucks.
Bottom line: Great affordable lights to augment window daylight for your interior video shoots.
